Recycling (reducing and reusing) in our communityFriday 16th of November 2012
On Wednesday evening we heard interesting people share their stories on their visions and projects to reduce waste going to landfill. Some people are at the ideas stage, some are up and running but need donations of items such as shoes and sports equipment, many are looking for people to become involved in the group. Check out the following links to find out more, how you can help or become involved.
- Waste Not Wood Not - Raf & Anna are two parents who met at a school playground earlier this year and have created a business selling sawdust briquettes for firewood, saving them from landfill. Even their boxes are made from used cardboard boxes that have been turned inside out and relabelled.
- Green Events Planning - Emma has been involved in helping events to be low waste including the Fairbridge Music Festival and the Wave Rock Weekender. Around 6000 the Hulbert St Sustainability Fiesta and only 6 domestic bins of waste and recycling were produced.
- Fair Game - Natalie shared stories of this group which has been collecting used sports equipment and distributing to communities in need and inspiring healthy communities through sport and wellness programs. Donations of sporting equipment and sports shoes needed.
- reSHOE - operating out of UWA, this group aims to rescue some of the 30 million pairs shoes that go to landfill in Australia each year. Nancy shared reSHOE's vision to collect 30,000 pairs of shoes to send for use in the reused shoe market in Ghana.
Western Salvation - a group set up by Earth Carers Cath and a school friend to foster the collection, repair, reuse and recycling of domestic bulk hard waste in the Perth western Suburbs and surrounding areas. Cath's vision of a multi-functional community hub is inspiring, she is looking for a venue and some help!
