Perth Modern Students make deodorant

Friday 4th of September 2015

When teacher/librarian Rosemary Burton completed the Earth Carers course she immediately saw the potential for it to be incorporated into the school's Environmental Advocacy group's studies. Now 17 Perth Modern students have just finished an adapted version of the Earth Carers course held during school hours.  In five 40 minute sessions they have audited a school bin, resurrected the compost bin inthe school garden, and got hands on making beeswax food wraps and their own deodorant. They had challenges to do at home such as op shopping, checking out their home bins, and preparing containers to encourage recycling.  For all of this they earned community service hours.  We got lots of positive feedback from the students:

“I liked the hands-on sessions and talks in which we discussed being an Earth Carer at home and in the community”

“I was amazed at how easy it is to start improving on my waste management at home”

Look out for our newest recruits helping out at the WA Too Good to Waste stand at the Perth Royal Show!
